Supporting Market Gardeners in Santa (Cameroon) Through Awareness Creation to Adopt Organic Farming
80% of the population of Santa earn a living from agriculture. Although many crop types are cultivated, market gardening has become by far the most attractive sub sector. This is because Garden crops such as cabbage, celery, carrot, green beans, tomatoes and parsley have a huge market abroad and at home. To meet up with demand there is an abusive use of chemical fertilizer by market gardeners. The consequences are: loss in soil fertility, pollution of water sources and harm to health. Through the small project to support gardeners to adopt organic farming, 80 leaders of farming groups (61 of whom were women) were sensitised on the benefits of organic farming. The aim was to contribute in increasing the production and productivity of healthy foods in Santa. Project period was two months from November to December 2023. At the end of the project, the beneficiaries outlined incentives to be considered for them to fully practice organic farming;
